Every year, we throw open the doors of our Centre for Excellence to welcome a group of curious, energetic 16–17 year olds for Hospice School. And every year, it’s one of the best things we do. This time, more young people than ever wanted to join our two-day course. It’s made for anyone thinking about a career in healthcare.
Our Education team, along with doctors, nurses, counsellors, and care staff gave the group a real taste of hospice life — and busted a few myths along the way.
Over the two days, students:
Took a tour of the hospice
Tried out care activities with our amazingly lifelike training mannequin, Vivian!
Sat in on a simulation meeting with a mix of healthcare professionals
Learned about leadership in healthcare
Talked about self-care — because you can’t care for others if you don’t look after yourself
The best bit for us? The energy they bring. They come ready to learn, ask questions, and join in. It’s amazing to see their confidence grow in just two days.
This year we were lucky to have Chris Murray, our Centre for Excellence Trustee, sit in on the leadership session. His experience made a big impact on the group.
We’re already counting down to Hospice School 2026.
We’ve had lots of questions recently about our Education team and the work they do, so we thought we’d take a moment to shed some light on their activities.
The Education team at the Centre for Excellence has been busy delivering teaching sessions and supporting learning across our local workforce in LLR. They train medical students, junior doctors, and care home staff, among others, equipping them with the skills and confidence to ensure more good deaths—where patients and families receive compassionate, high-quality end-of-life care that is specific to their individual needs.
While LOROS may not be able to care for every patient who needs us across LLR, through the Centre for Excellence we hope to extend our impact by supporting and educating medical professionals and care teams throughout the region.
If you’re interested in joining one of our training courses, they are available to book internally via loros.co.uk/training but please remember to check with your line manager before booking asking for a study release form.
Here’s a selection of the courses we are running for the next 6 months.
