“I’m proud to be a nurse” LOROS marks Nurses’ Day

12 May 2022

Thursday 12th May marks Nurses’ Day, a day to celebrate these hard-working heroes of the NHS.

At LOROS Hospice, nurses have always been at the heart of exceptional care for patients. But over the past two years, their professionalism, compassion and courage on the Inpatient Ward, has become even more important for patients and their families.

Katie Sherratt is one of the team who cared for terminally ill patients throughout the pandemic.

She said: "Covid has been terrible for families, as we had to restrict visits to the Ward to protect patients from infection. We tried so hard to make up for that, by spending lots of time with our patients, chatting to them about their interests, and doing everything we could to make them feel loved and cared for.

"Where possible we tried to find a way to bring families together. One man brought his wife’s dog to see her through her bedroom window, it stood up on hind legs and put its paws on the window ledge! It cheered her up so much to see their beloved pet.

"We try to create happy memories for our patients and their families."

“Though busy and upsetting at times, there was no better feeling than going home knowing that you could not have done any more for your patients.

"I’m proud to be a nurse and proud to wear a LOROS badge.”

Jo Kavanagh, Director of Care Services at LOROS, said: “We have a brilliant team of nurses at LOROS who always go above and beyond for our patients and families. During the toughest of times over the past two years, they have demonstrated courage, compassion and true professionalism and have supported each other in addition to their patients.

“They are all greatly valued and on behalf of LOROS to mark International Nurses Day I would like to thank them for their dedication and commitment to the Hospice.”

Katie is asking the community to show their support for LOROS nurses by helping the hospice continue its great care for patients and their families at the most difficult time of their lives.

By playing the Spring into Summer Raffle you’ll be helping LOROS to be here no matter what the future holds. With a top prize of £5,000 it’s also a great way to welcome in the summer. You have until 5th June to grab your tickets. Find out more at loros.co.uk/raffle

Mary's story

If you’ve been at the Hospice recently you may have spotted Sir Stomp-a-lot sitting proudly in our woodland garden area. Wondering how he got there? There is a powerful story behind Sir Stomp-a-lot and his new home. Mary Knight bid for the coin-covered elephant in our Stomp Round Leicester Auction back in October and then donated him back to the Hospice in memory of her husband, Mark Warner.
