A message from Linda

Richard Holding came into LOROS in late November. Thankfully we’d just gained funding to temporarily open four beds on our Willow ward, so were able to welcome Richard and his wife Linda on to our inpatient ward. You might remember Richard – he was interviewed by BBC East Midlands Today when they visited the hospice in December. Fast forward to January and under LOROS care, Richard had improved enough to go home. Linda wrote us a lovely message on how LOROS helped.

"Richard was in excruciating pain when he was transferred to LOROS. The palliative consultant at the hospital could take his pain management no further and suggested LOROS as they had excellent pain management care. Had Richard not secured a bed in LOROS we really don’t know what could have been done with the severe pain and he would have continued a very quick decline in his health. As it was, before the transfer, the pain was so bad he just wanted to die.

One day in LOROS started his journey back, the doctors checking very closely his reaction to the medication and staff reporting quickly with pain levels. He is now comfortable and thanks to LOROS, at home. We will be forever grateful for everything LOROS did, they saved him. Words just can’t sum up the feelings we have for this wonderful place, its amazing staff and volunteers and ‘thank yous’ don’t seem enough.

The care, support, treatment, empathy and consideration we have received from absolutely everyone here has been incredible.

We have felt part of the LOROS family at the lowest and scariest point in our lives over the past 7 weeks. There hasn’t been a day that we’ve felt alone, always someone there with a smile, a ‘pick us up’ chat, checking we’re all ok, feeding us well, answering our every call.

Nothing has been too much trouble for every person that has been involved in our journey.

Our ‘date night’, Christmas and New Year were amazing. It’s been a home with excellent medical care, great doctors, nurses, care assistants, catering, housekeeping, reception welcomes, the list goes on !!

We are heading home together, a place we never thought we’d get back to together. But you did it LOROS, THANK YOU !!!"

With love, Richard and Linda Holding

This is why it’s so important for all our beds at the hospice to open. Because at any point, it could be your friend, relative or loved one who needs it and cannot wait. Please show your support for LOROS in any way you can. Thank you.

Mary's story

If you’ve been at the Hospice recently you may have spotted Sir Stomp-a-lot sitting proudly in our woodland garden area. Wondering how he got there? There is a powerful story behind Sir Stomp-a-lot and his new home. Mary Knight bid for the coin-covered elephant in our Stomp Round Leicester Auction back in October and then donated him back to the Hospice in memory of her husband, Mark Warner.

Ava's story

"When he finally went to LOROS, he only had three days left — but those three days meant everything. Dad’s room at LOROS felt like a little Airbnb, not a hospital. It was peaceful and opened onto the gardens. We could stay close to him the whole time. It felt calm — almost normal — which was such a comfort."
