Professor Irene Higginson is the founder of the Cicely Saunders Institute at King’s College London, the world’s first purpose-built centre for palliative and end-of-life care research and education integrated with clinical care. A clinical academic, dual trained in palliative medicine and public health, her pioneering work and partnerships have shaped palliative care policy, research and clinical practice internationally. At King’s she leads the Better Health and Care Hub — a cross-faculty initiative bringing together clinical innovation and research and education for people with complex illness. The Institute’s MSc and PhD programmes, to which she contributes, continue her vision, training the next generation of researchers to improve quality of life and care for people with advanced illness.
