Centre for Excellence update

by Camilla Barrow

I am thrilled to announce the appointment of Dr. Zoebia Islam  as the new Research Lead in Social Equity impact and Strategy at the LOROS Centre for Excellence. Nationally Zoebia has also been appointed as the East Midlands Regional Research Delivery Network Community-based Settings Lead.

Zoebia is an Academic Researcher and LOROS Associate Professor of Palliative Care and Frailty at University of Leicester. Throughout her research career Zoebia has challenged inequalities and inequity in healthcare. She has developed and built strategic collaborative partnerships regionally and nationally. She has also secured significant research funding, which is so crucial to the financial sustainability of the Centre for Excellence,  with a nationally recognised portfolio of work focusing on tackling health inequity in the provision of palliative and end of life care for people who are from under-served ethnically communities.

As our Research Lead in Social Equity, Impact and Strategy, Zoebia will lead the strategic direction of a programme of research focusing on tackling inequality and inequity in palliative and end of life care. She will lead in the development, prioritisation, implementation and management of this area of the research strategy, ensuring it is fully integrated and translated into the wider work of the Centre for Excellence.

Zoebia has also been recognised as an opinion leader on research delivery as acknowledged in her appointment as the East Midlands Regional Research Delivery Network (RRDN) Community-based Settings Lead. This role allows her to draw on extensive research knowledge and experience and also work with community-based partners and Speciality Leads to gather local intelligence and feed it into national strategies to build capacity and capability within the community based settings.

Commenting on the new roles Zoebia said:

“I have had the privilege of working at LOROS since 2013, firstly as a Senior Research Fellow and then  Deputy Lead for Research. I am dedicated to creating an equitable research environment where diverse perspectives are not only welcomed but actively sought out. By ensuring that our research reflects a broad range of voices and experiences LOROS’s research makes a real difference to the patients, families and communities we serve.  I’m absolutely delighted to be appointed Research Lead in Social Equity impact and Strategy and have the opportunity to continue working with our superb team in the LOROS Centre for Excellence and drive this work forward.

Being appointed the East Midlands Regional Research Delivery Network Community-based Settings Lead is a real honour and privilege and working with colleagues in the Research Delivery Network I will strive to continue to build inclusive and accessible research.”
