I am pleased to share that the first paper from the Equitable Bereavement Care for All (EBCA) study has now been published in BMC Medicine.
This NIHR-funded study is the largest qualitative study to date exploring bereavement experiences among ethnically diverse communities in the UK. A key part of the research was working alongside community researchers, who helped us engage with communities, collect data in preferred languages, and ensure people's experiences were heard and understood.
The study highlights how experiences of racism can shape and intensify grief and bereavement, and proposes a new framework to support more equitable bereavement care.
To build on these important findings, we would like to invite you to the upcoming LOROS Centre for Excellence Sawubona Forum and Palliative Care Research Incubator (PRI) Virtual Learning and Knowledge Exchange Event on 15th October 2026. At the event, Associate Professor Zoebia Islam, Dr Sabrina Bajwah, Dr Catriona Mayland, community researchers from the EBCA study team will share our experiences of working with community researchers and discuss how this approach can help make palliative and end-of-life care research more inclusive and relevant to underserved communities.
We would be delighted if you could join us and help shape the conversation around more equitable, community-centred research.
This solution focused task and finish group is open to anyone across the hospice who is interested in making our services more equitable, inclusive, and accessible for all the diverse communities we serve.
Whether you have ideas to share, experiences to contribute, or simply want to be part of the conversation, we would welcome your involvement. The group meets every two months via Microsoft Teams and aims to support practical actions that help us deliver more inclusive care.
The next meeting is 1st September 10am-11am.
