When Linda called to tell me about her husband Richard, she said something that has stayed with me.
“The pain was so severe,” she told me. “He just wanted it to stop.”
By the time Richard was transferred to LOROS, his pain was overwhelming. It left little room for anything else — not for rest, not for comfort, not for time with his family.
What happened next is exactly why LOROS exists.
Our doctors carefully reviewed Richard’s medication — monitoring his response, adjusting, and observing closely. Gradually, the pain eased. Richard began to feel more like himself again.
“One day in LOROS started his journey back,” Linda told me. “He is now comfortable, thanks to LOROS.”

But we are not back to full capacity.
LOROS has 31 beds on our inpatient ward. At present, not all of them are open. This means there are still people in Leicestershire waiting for the kind of care Richard received. People whose pain could be managed by our team, if only we had the funding to open those doors.
Reopening every bed would mean care for a further 156 patients each year. People whose symptoms could be controlled. Whose families could be supported. Who might — like Richard — be able to return home for their final weeks.
No one should have to wait for that level of care.
