“Our community is so important to us” LOROS marks Hospice Care Week 2021

Monday 4th October marks the start of national Hospice Care Week (4th-10th October 2021), an annual awareness-raising week to help raise the profile of hospice care across the UK.

After a challenging year, for this year’s Hospice Care Week, LOROS Hospice is focusing on its community.

For the past ten weeks the charity’s sculpture art trail, Rocket Round Leicester, has steered a voyage around the city of Leicester.

Rocket Round Leicester has brought the community of Leicester together, with fun and excitement at the fleet of 40 spectacular Rocket sculptures and 35 Junior Jets. The trail has helped people chat and interact in a way that the pandemic has made so difficult. It’s been a voyage of recovery for the city of Leicester and a welcome return to more normal times.

But it has served another very important purpose. As a local hospice, LOROS is at the heart of the community of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. Patients, their families and carers, staff and volunteers live and work in the area and the charity relies on the support of its community to raise the money needed to care for more than 2,500 patients and relatives each year.

The Rocket trail has raised greater awareness of LOROS care amongst local people, securing the charity’s position at the heart of its community.

Jo Kavanagh, Director of Care Services, said: “Over the past ten weeks of the Rocket Round Leicester trail we’ve shown our community why our care is so special.

“We’ve been rewarded with overwhelming support through people attending our events, purchasing raffle tickets, enjoying the trail and buying merchandise. It’s been fantastic.”

The Farewell Weekend on 9th and 10th October, where all 40 Rockets will be gathered together at the National Space Centre, will also be a great finale for Hospice Care Week.

As well as entertainment, refreshments and fun, LOROS staff including nurses, doctors and other care services personnel, will be on hand to talk about LOROS care, its ethos and the impact it has on patients and their families.

Jo added: “Our Farewell Weekend coincides with Hospice Care Week which is perfect as we want to show people what the Rocket trail has been all about. We want our supporters to know where their money goes and what a lifeline it is for us. Our community is so important to us and to everything we do.”

Tickets for the Farewell Weekend are available at loros.co.uk/farewell
