On Saturday 16th September, colleagues from Tarmac in Leicester set out from Mountsorrel Quarry to cycle all the way to Skegness and raise funds for our Hospice in memory of their colleague and friend Robert Stevens.

Bob sadly passed away in May 2017 after a battle against Prostate Cancer.

Bob worked at Mountsorrel Quarry for many years of his life so he was well known across the large site.

Phill Wilson from Tarmac said: “Bob wanted to take part in a charity bike ride to Skegness some years ago prior to becoming ill but sadly the event was never organised so when we talked about doing something special to remember Bob we felt this would have seen his approval.

“This was a real challenge as most the participants were complete novice cyclists, some not even owning a bike until this event was organised.”

Diane Stevens, Bob’s wife who also works at Tarmac added: “The weather was kind to us for the most part, but we did suffer from some very squally showers at times! The last two cyclists crossed the finish line at 17.50pm enabling everyone to prepare for their evening celebrations.”

During dinner, the team cyclists were presented with surprise medals and the support team all received "thank you" key rings/bottle top openers. Both were engraved with "thank you - Bob's bike ride - 2017".

To date, the team has raised an absolutely superb £5,700 with more to come in too.  Thank you for your wonderful support, it means so much to us.

We are looking forward to meeting Diane, Jemma and Phill and hearing lots more about the event and how much in total the team Tarmac raised. They are hoping for £8,000 which is incredible!
