Volunteer news

Following the positive feedback received from the two sessions held in July, and conscious there are some staff and volunteers who were unable to attend, we have scheduled a further workshop date.  This will take place next Tuesday, 11th August at from 10.30am to 1pm in Twycross/Saunders. 

This session is a valuable opportunity for our workforce and volunteers to come together, share ideas, and engage directly in discussions about our future direction. Your insights, experience, and perspectives are incredibly important, and we would really value your contribution. 

The sessions will be interactive and collaborative, focusing on what matters most to our organisation, the communities we serve, and how we work together to deliver our mission.

We need your volunteer support!

Come and cheer runners on, help marshal the event at different points and represent LOROS on Sunday 11th October. The event will be taking place at Victoria Park with marshalling taking place around the city.

This event will see thousands of runners take to the streets of our beautiful city to raise funds for our hospice. Shifts are available for set up on Saturday 10th  October from 10am or on event day from 7am. We do look after you and provide food and a briefing!

At a time when life can feel uncertain, LOROS Day Hospice provides a welcoming space where people can socialise, make meaningful friendships and realise they're not alone. Our volunteers help to create activities from quiz sessions, yoga, breathing to arts and craft sessions.  

As always there has been plenty of creativity in our Day Hospice! Last week our wonderful volunteer, Lynda, helped patients to create their own beautiful windchimes.  

Activities like these are about so much more than making something special to take home. They offer an opportunity to relax, express creativity and spend time together.  

A huge thank you to Lynda Bizley for sharing her creativity with our Day Hospice patients. 

We’ve had new houseware items flying off the shelves and our new range of cushions have been such a success! Our shops are also planning for Christmas, with Christmas cards hitting the shelves very soon! 

We are on the look out for volunteers to join us in the following shops:

• Coalville

I wanted to provide a brief update on the Systems Focused Incident Review currently underway. 

As a reminder, this review was commissioned by the Senior Leadership Team, with the support of the Board of Trustees, following the challenges faced by LOROS during 2025 and the major organisational changes that followed. The review seeks to understand the wider systems, processes, and organisational factors that contributed to these events, identify key learning, and make recommendations to support the future resilience and effectiveness of the charity. 

The review has taken longer than anticipated, and I would like to apologise for this delay.  The additional time has been needed to follow-up work on lines of enquiry; and has some competing demands within the Centre for Excellence. 

We have completed our analysis of feedback gathered through stakeholder engagement; a review of relevant documents and other lines of enquiry. We will shortly be meeting with the review group to review our draft report and finalise recommendations. 

Once the report is published, we will hold some further briefings and there will be confidential opportunities for feedback from staff, volunteers, and members of the wider LOROS community. 

We will welcome comments, challenge, or requests for clarification about our findings and recommendations; this will allow us to ensure that our analysis and recommendations any relevant and helpful. 

We are extremely grateful for the time, openness, and thoughtful contributions that so many colleagues across LOROS have given to this work;  your engagement has been invaluable and has generated significant learning for the future.

It’s been a real joy to see all the beautiful gardens at LOROS, a BIG thank you to all the volunteers that have been ensuring that the flowers and plants are watered regularly in this heat! We’ve had lovely donations of plants and all the produce goes into the kitchens too! 

The beautiful hanging baskets outside our ward and patients' rooms bring so much more than colour to LOROS. For many of our patients, especially those who are bedbound, they offer a connection to the outdoors and something uplifting to look at each day.  

Our wonderful volunteer, Pete, shares just how important they are: "No matter where a patient is lying, they can usually see the flowers. They bring a bit of colour into the day. If someone can't get outside or walk around, they can still enjoy seeing them from their bed—and that can make all the difference."
