Hospice UK awards

On behalf of Michelle Clark and Veronica Mickleburgh

This year LOROS was very proud to nominate a few staff and volunteers for Hospice UK Awards.

Sam Ofosuaah, Supporter Data and Insights Lead, and Angela Baxter, Complementary Therapy Manager,  were nominated for the Digital Champion Award.

Sam has created a digital acuity tool for the inpatient unit which will help senior nurses assess the acuity of the patients on the ward and ensure safe staffing levels are maintained. This acuity tool is also able to provide reports on the complexity of our patients over time which can be submitted to our strategic partners when required but at the same time is simple for nurses to complete through MS Teams on their phones or the ward computers.

Angela played a pivotal role in embedding the new digital ‘Tell Us What You Think’ tool into practice. The tool itself was co-designed with the university and was an opportunity to move from paper forms which were time consuming to collate to a digital tool which can provide real-time insight into the quality of care and the impact of our services. Angela embraced the technology both independently and in collaboration with colleagues, showing enthusiasm and determination from the outset.

Peter Kerrigan was nominated by the ward for the Anne, Duchess of Norfolk Volunteer of the Year Award.

The ward staff wanted to recognise Pete for the amount of work he puts in as a volunteer for LOROS. When asked what difference Pete makes to the ward an example of the comments received were ‘The place would fall apart without him’, ‘Nothing is too much trouble’, ‘Patients love him’. Most mornings at around 7am you can find him on the ward. Alongside practical help to patients, such as helping with feeding, he is also a welcome companion to patients and their families. Pete also puts a lot of effort into celebrating a wide variety of events on the ward and is often putting up decorations or donning fancy dress in a bid to bring some fun to the unit. In addition Pete supports several bereavement hubs over the course of the week. As if this was not enough Pete has also raised considerable funds for LOROS and received a League of Mercy Award in 2019 in recognition of this.

Though none of our nominees achieved the final award we are very proud to work with people of this calibre here at LOROS.
