Celebrating our diverse community

Black History Month

The theme for Black History Month UK 2025 is “Standing Firm in Power and Pride,” a powerful tribute to the resilience, strength, and unwavering commitment to progress that defines the Black community across the globe.

Power represents the influence, leadership, and capacity to effect positive change. It acknowledges the visionaries who have led political, civil rights, and social movements, as well as those who have broken barriers in business, education, and the arts.

Pride reflects cultural identity, heritage, and the celebration of Black excellence. From the arts and music to the stories passed through generations, pride is part of Black communities worldwide.

Black History Month 2025 will honour key anniversaries, including the 60th anniversary of the Race Relations Act, the death of Malcolm X, and the Bristol Bus Boycott, led by the late Paul Stephenson. It also marks 40 years of Leicester Caribbean Carnival and 5 years since the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement, following the murder of George Floyd. These milestones serve as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality and justice, and the tireless efforts of those who have fought for the rights of Black people and communities.

Diwali

Diwali, the Festival of Lights, will be celebrated across the world with vibrant events, fireworks, and cultural festivities. Starting on Friday, October 17, the five-day festival peaks with Laxmi Puja on Monday, October 20, when families worship Goddess Lakshmi for prosperity.

Leicester hosts one of the largest Diwali celebrations outside of India, reflecting the city's rich cultural diversity and strong Hindu community. Diwali is also celebrated by Jains, Sikhs and some Buddhists and symbolises the victory of light over darkness; it is a highlight of the cultural calendar in Leicester.
