A family fun day will be held in memory of a former Harborough and Lutterworth woman who died last year at the age of 33 after a two and-a-half year battle with breast cancer.
Amber Baxter, nee Fink, died at the LOROS hospice in August last year.
Her husband David Baxter is raising money for LOROS and Macmillan Cancer Support – the two charities which supported his wife and her family – by tackling a 130km section of the Tour de France route in July.
The event is called L’Étape du Tour and includes an ascent of Semnoz, a mountain higher than Ben Nevis. It gives amateur cyclists an opportunity to test their legs on the famous route.
Mr Baxter is being accompanied by his brother and a small group of friends.
In a bid to boost the group’s fundraising, Amber Baxter’s friend Amber Mackay is hosting a fun day at Harborough Rugby Club on Saturday, June 15, with live music, stalls and a large charity raffle.
Amber Baxter grew up in Market Harborough and attended both Welland Park and Robert Smyth Schools and moved to Lutterworth shortly after she married her husband, who she had met through her friend Mel Baxter when she was a teenager. The couple were married for almost nine years before Amber’s death.
She worked as an occupational therapist in Chesterfield and then at Leicester Royal Infirmary and Leicester General Hospital.
Amber’s mother Lorimer Fink said: “LOROS gave Amber and the family lots of support and I don’t know what we would have done without them.
“In the weeks before she passed away, the medical care, help and support of the LOROS doctors and nurses enabled Amber to continue to live her life and to attend her youngest sister’s wedding.”
Amber’s husband David said: “Macmillan helped Amber in lots of ways, including funding the breast care nurses and Amber really appreciated their support.”
Mrs Fink said her daughter took strength from her faith, as she was a Christian and attended Lutterworth Community Church. Amber’s parents, Lorimer and Michael Fink wrote a tribute to their daughter in the spring/summer LOROS magazine.
