A woman whose husband was cared for at LOROS hospice during his final days has won £10,000 in the charity's latest raffle.

Janet Littler, of Coalville, said she cried after being told she had won the top prize in the charity's Christmas draw.

Her husband, John, spent two weeks at the hospice before he died in June, aged 66.

Janet said she was planning to donate £1,000 of her winnings back to the charity as a thank-you for his care.

"We had both always supported LOROS and they were fantastic when he was there last June," she said. "My father-in-law also died at LOROS.

"I had done a few of the raffles and I started doing the LOROS lottery as well, just before John died."

John had first been diagnosed with cancer six years ago. He was told he had pancreatic cancer in February and died at LOROS four months later.

Janet said the hospice, in Groby Road, Leicester, was "a home from home" during his time there.

She said: "Everyone there was so friendly. They support you as well as the person who is ill and that was a really big thing for me.

"It helped me come to terms with things.

"They couldn't have done more for either of us.

"When I found out I had won the raffle money, I just cried. It was a real shock.

"But it's come at a good time because I needed a new shower, so I've treated myself.

"I'm going to donate £1,000 back to LOROS by buying something from its wish list.

"I've not made my mind up yet, but it has things such as mattresses, hoists and recliner chairs on it, as well as smaller things such as stools."

LOROS lottery manager Liz Singleton said: "Our Christmas raffle has raised about £85,000 profit for the hospice, a fantastic contribution towards patient care.

"I would like to thank everyone who took part.

"LOROS is so lucky to have the support of so many wonderful people."

Tickets for the LOROS spring raffle will be available from April, with the draw taking place in June.
