Charity workers at Leicestershire's Loros hospice say this year's Twilight Walk will be the biggest and best yet.

Organisers are expecting more than 1,000 women to take part in the city centre walk, which they hope will raise about £25,000.

The annual event is now in its seventh year, and numbers continue to grow.

For many walkers, the event is an opportunity to remember loved ones and to raise money as a thank-you to the Groby Road hospice.

Loros fund-raising manager Diane Morris said: "We are excited to be holding the Twilight Walk at the King Power Stadium again.

"Ladies, please come along and support Loros.

"There will also be the opportunity to remember a loved one by releasing a balloon in their memory."

Diane said the number of people registered to take part in the ladies-only walk was up on this time last year.

"We had about 300 people the year before last and 900 last year so we're expecting more than 1,000 for this one," she said. "This is going to be the biggest, without a doubt.

"It's going to be tremendous."

This year's event takes place on Saturday, March 31, starting at the King Power Stadium and following a route around the city centre.

Participants are always encouraged to dress up, and this year there will be an Hawaiian theme.

"It is a fun ladies' night out and we do hope people will shimmy in their grass skirts and colourful garlands and have a brilliant night out to support a great local cause.

"We are hoping to raise £25,000 which will help support the 2,500 patients and their families that use our free services each year."

The walk starts at 7.30pm at the King Power Stadium, but participants are advised to arrive earlier for a warm-up.

Walkers will follow a six-mile route around the city centre.

Tracey Brown, 39, of Sileby, said: "I'm doing it because my father has bone cancer and he's been into Loros a few times now and they're just wonderful. He thinks it's fantastic – he says it's like being in a five-star hotel.

"For a family member, that's what we want."

Also taking part will be Anisha Karolia, who owns women's gym AK Fitness, in Evington, Leicester.

She will be walking alongside about 40 members from the gym.

Anisha, 38, of Humberstone, said: "We did it last year and we're doing it again this year – we're planning a bit of a surprise but I can't say what it is.

"Cancer affects so many people and Loros is such a worthy cause – the people there are amazing. It's a cause close to all of our hearts."

Registration for the event costs £10 and includes a free T-shirt and goodies at the finish.
