The clergyman will clock up a total of 800 miles by cycling between his home in Measham and the hospice, in Groby Road, Leicester.

Cash raised in sponsorship will go towards a remembrance tree sculpture for the charity, which will allow visitors to hang paper leaves dedicated to loved ones who have died.

Mr Martin, 47, said: "We have had things like this before, such as a blue background where people could pin up paper clouds with the names of loved ones written on, and people found it very therapeutic.

"I used to cycle quite a lot, but with injuries and church commitments and the rest of it, I haven't cycled much for a while. I am looking forward to it."

The sculpture is being created by artist Liam Hadjipetrou and will be installed in the prayer room.

To sponsor Mr Martin, you can send a cheque, made out to LOROS, to Rev Martin c/o LOROS Fundraising, The Leicestershire and Rutland Hospice, Groby Road, Leicester, LE3 9QE.
