A team of family and friends from Melton have conquered the Three Peaks Challenge in a 24 hour period with seven seconds to spare.

The group of 13 climbed the UK’s highest peaks, Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Mount Snowdon with the help of Stuart Williams, principle of the Catmose Federation, the governing body of Catmose College and Southfield Community Primary School, who provided a mini-bus for the event.

The climb was held to honour the memory of some of the group’s close relatives, who died from cancer.

Sarah Hatherley, team member and early years teacher at Catmose Primary School, said: “We wanted to give something back to both Cancer Research UK and LOROS who helped our families cope with the disease.”

The team started their journey in July at Ben Nevis, conquering the mountain in over five hours. They then drove to Scafell Pike at 1.30am and with head torches to light their way embarked on a wet climb to the top. Four hours later they arrived back at the van for 5.30am and drove to Snowdon.

Despite high winds the sun was out and although the previous climbs had taken their toll on the team they completed the challenge in the time limit.

A total £3,000 was raised from the event for the two charities.
