Twenty volunteers from the Leicester hospice LOROS helped out at the Tesco store, in Braunstone Gate, Leicester.

The team, led by organiser Bernadette Fenn – a fundraiser at LOROS – worked two sessions on Friday and Saturday.

Bernadette said: "We are delighted with the amount raised. All the volunteers did a splendid job and the customers were so generous.

"We appreciate Tesco giving us the opportunity to raise funds like this and we can't wait to get back there for more sessions in December."

A Tesco spokesman said: "We are pleased to be working with local charities such as LOROS."
