The 32-year-old, from Eye Kettleby, near Melton, who was paralysed in a horse-riding accident, won the hearts of the nation in April when she completed the London Marathon in 16 days, wearing a robotic suit.

Her epic feat led to an invitation to light the cauldron in Trafalgar Square to launch the Paralympic torch relay.

Now, she has been invited to officially start Leicester Marathon on Sunday, October 14 and greet runners as they pass the start line in Victoria Park.

Looking ahead to the race, which is raising money for county charities LOROS and the Matt Hampson Foundation, Claire said: "I'm delighted to be asked to start the race, which is in aid of such great charities."

After her efforts in London, she said: "I'm also glad to not be taking part in this marathon! I wish all the runners the very best of luck."

Claire received £10,000 from the Matt Hampson Foundation towards the pioneering robotic suit she used for the London Marathon.

Charity spokesman Tommy Cawston said: "Claire and Matt are good friends and we were proud to be associated with her fantastic effort."

More than 2,300 runners have signed up for this year's marathon and half-marathon.

Among them is Bhavik Ghelant, 31, of Rowlatts Hill, Leicester, who will be running his first marathon for the Leicester Hospitals Kidney Care Appeal, inspired by his mother, who has one kidney.

"I'm nervous but excited," he said. "I think it will inspire us all to see Claire on the start line."

Dave Wheeler, 56, of Fleckney, is about to sign up for the 13-mile event.

"I'm a great admirer of Claire," he said. "Her story is a message to anybody that, whatever the challenge, it can be overcome with courage and determination."

Race organiser Christian Weikert-Picker, of LOROS, said: "Claire is a role model to so many people and we are delighted to have her on board.

"She shows what is physically possible if you have the drive to achieve. It's about being the best we can be, no matter what our age, ability or difficulties."

This year's marathon day will include a new LOROS Maza Fun Run, from Abbey Park to Victoria Park, and a Health and Wellbeing Marketplace offering advice and guidance on healthy living and sporting activities on offer in Leicester

Mr Weikert-Picker said: "Most importantly, this day is about encouraging as many people as possible to come and join in with the races, have fun and raise as much money as possible for two great Leicestershire charities."

Participants and spectators are urged leave their cars behind and cycle to the event.
