One dog only had three legs and was blind in one eye but managed to finish the course.

Called Paws 4 a Cause, the walk organisers are hoping the final tally of money raised from the event will at least top last year's £13,000.

The Abbey Park fundraiser is held to raise money for LOROS, the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland hospice.

A spokesman for the hospice said: "We had two start times of 10am and 11am, for the 4km route around Abbey Park.

"These proved popular and it meant the dogs and their walkers were fortunate enough to miss the wintry showers.

"The volunteers and Army Cadets were a huge help on the day, making the event run smoothly and efficiently.

"We will definitely be holding the event again next year but might make it a little later so that the park is in full colour."

One couple, from Broughton Astley, who took part, said: "We really enjoyed this event. It was well organised and the weather was kind to us.

"Freddie, our dog, received a doggy bag after his walk and has so far raised more than £60 for LOROS."

The next sponsored walk organised by LOROS is the 999 emergency Twilight walk on Saturday, April 26.
