Members of the public in Leicester are being invited to join in with Yorkshire Building Society’s 150th anniversary celebrations by nominating small charities and good causes in their community to receive a share of £150,000.

Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation has made the donation available – £1,000 for every year the Society has been helping people save for their futures and buy their first homes – as part of its annual Make a Difference campaign.

Colleagues at the Society’s branch on Horsefair Street are calling on local residents and shoppers to call in to the branch and nominate a charity or good cause close to their heart between Monday, 18 and Saturday, 23 August. All nominated charities will be considered to receive a £100 share of the Charitable Foundation’s anniversary donation. Nominations will also be accepted at Yorkshire Building Society’s agency on Gipsy Lane.

Richard Elston, manager of the Leicester branch of Yorkshire Building Society, said: “We’re all really excited to get involved in the Society’s 150 year celebrations and to have our branch be part of a £150,000 giveaway that could help benefit our local community is just brilliant.

“The Make a Difference campaign is our opportunity to help some of the smaller causes that can often be overlooked for donations but to whom £100 could really have a positive effect. I hope people in the town will take a minute to call into our branch and fill in a nomination form – we would love to be handing out money to our members’ favourite charities and good causes in the next few weeks.”

The £150,000 to be given away by Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation is largely made up of donations the Society receives through its innovative ‘Small Change Big Difference’ scheme. Members of the Society can choose to donate pennies from the interest they receive on their accounts to the Charitable Foundation.

Alex Gamble, Partnership Development Executive at LOROS said' "We are delighted to have been nominated to get a £100 share of the Charitable Foundation’s anniversary donation. Hopefully, with the communities help, we will get enough votes to secure this money as this could pay for 20 patient meals for one day and would be very helpful."
