A MAN from Woodhouse Eaves who lost his wife to a rare and aggressive form of cancer is to run 12 half marathons in 12 months to mark what would have been her 40th birthday.
Sharon Gregory passed away on November 7, 2012 just weeks after being diagnosed with a rare and aggressive peritoneal cancer, leaving behind husband David and daughters Amber and Chelsea.
She was just 37-years-old.
As what would have been her 40th birthday on December 15 approaches, husband David has decided to take on the mammoth task to raise money for LOROS.
“If it wasn’t for the LOROS Hospice we wouldn’t have managed to share private moments together at the hospice, special memories of her final days that we all look back on with a heavy heart,” said David.
“The care provided by LOROS for Sharon enabled her to spend as much precious time as possible with her family and friends during her final days.
“The doctors, nurses, volunteers at the LOROS Hospice provided amazing care and treatment, even enabling us to take Sharon and our family on a special day trip through Bradgate Park in a Hummer Limousine.
“This was one of Sharon’s final wishes and wouldn’t of been possible without the support of staff and a volunteer nurse from the LOROS Hospice who helped make this special day possible.
“From leaving the hospital, Sharon looked as if she might not make another day but the treatment and care given by the LOROS team gave Sharon more time with her family and friends.
“So far family and friends have helped raise over £11,000 including Steve Ball’s London Marathon, Gregory’s Girls, Emily Bowles’ LOROS Twilight Walk, Our Lady’s Convent School, and many more donations which I am so grateful for.
“I plan to run 12 half marathons over the next 12 months, the first one being the Leicester Half, to help raise much needed funds for LOROS Hospice.
“This December 15 would of been Sharon’s 40th birthday and I know she would of wanted a half or two, so please help by sponsoring me and celebrating Sharon’s 40th birthday year.”
During her career as a swimming teacher, Sharon taught more than 800 local children to swim at what is now Beacon Academy, as well as children from Mountsorrel, Shepshed, Coalville and New Parks.
David’s target is to raise £2,500 over the next 12 months.
