A charity donation was up for grabs today as participants flipped their way to the finish line at Leicester Market’s pancake day race.

The event was organised to raise awareness for Leicestershire charity LOROS which provides care for terminally ill patients and their families. A £100 was donated to the charity by the Leicester Market Traders Association.

Market traders, market staff, and local rugby team Leicester Storm took part in the race which started in the market square, and went through the centre of the market, past the food hall and finished back in the square.

Attendees were offered fresh pancakes, with a suggested 50p donation towards LOROS.

Adrian Walker, Senior Fundraiser for LOROS explains, “LOROS is the hospice based in Leicester, we look after patients from the whole of Leicestershire and the Rutland area, and obviously the money that’s raised today will go to help support those and provide all of the services that we offer.”

“That can be anything from coming in as an inpatient at the hospital itself, as an outpatient, or it might be being looked after in the community by one of our community nurses.”

The charities health and social care workers offer free care to approximately 2,500 patients per year as well as their families, and a much-needed army of over 1,000 volunteers currently support and assist paid members of staff.

“It’s quite a quiet time normally at this time of year and we thought it would be great to get involved with local charities like LOROS and go from there,“ says Adam Piotrowski, Development Officer at Leicester Market.

Volunteers for the charity were also on hand to marshal the race, provide information about the charity, and sell raffle tickets.

“I think it went really well, a lot of people showed interest,” said a LOROS volunteer.

“Very good, a lovely day at Leicester Market, everybody’s out and about, everybody looks happy,” said one visitor. “Good atmosphere, it’s Pancake Tuesday, and it’s nice to see everybody enjoying themselves!”

This was the first charity pancake day race to be held in Leicester Market, and hopefully there will be many more to follow.
