Tributes have been paid to a science teacher who was also a well-loved roller derby skater.

Clare Lawrence passed away last month after about seven months fighting a brain tumour.

She had taught at St Paul's Catholic School in Evington, Leicester, since 2005 and the school will be shut on Friday for her funeral.

In a message to pupils and families at the school the head teacher at St Paul's Catholic School, Neil Lockyer, said Clare was a "much-loved" member of staff.

He said: "Clare was incredibly popular with both staff and students alike as a result of her warm, infectious personality, her great sense of humour and her care for others.

"She was an excellent teacher, and supported our young people both inside and outside of the classroom.

"Clare's life was lived to the full and she made a tremendous difference to many, many people. We will all miss her."

Her sister, Rachel Hunter, has set up a Just Giving page that has so far raised nearly £4,000 in Clare's memory for LOROS, where Clare was cared for.

Rachel said: "My beautiful sister Clare brought so much fun, laughs and love to our lives. She was caring and generous, creative and intelligent.

"I have decided to raise money in memory of Clare for the LOROS Hospice as they were remarkable in their support and care for Clare and family."

In recent years Clare had played for the Roller Derby Leicester team and the Dolly Rockit Rollers.

Helen Bedford, a director of the Dolly Rockit Rollers, said: "Clare would always have us in fits of laughter.

"She was a good giggle and a great supporter of the team.

"It was terrible to hear the news. It's been so upsetting for everyone."

On the Roller Derby Leicester Facebook site, friends have shared their memories of Clare, whose skater name was Sweetabix.

Mojisola Angela Green said: "Sweet was my coach. She used to call us all to attention with her 'teacher's voice' and patiently watch over us as we tried time and time again to master a new skill.

"And once we had nailed it we were rewarded with her laugh and smile. RIP."

Rachael Emily Voss said: "So, so sad, but so proud to have skated with Sweet. Thinking of everyone who loved her."
