Runners are putting in their last training sessions and organisers are making the final preparations ahead of the Leicester Marathon next weekend.

The event is taking place on Sunday, October 25.

About 3,000 people from around the world are expected to take part, and it is not too late to sign up as the deadline is this Tuesday.

Participants can choose to run full marathon, half marathon, or the Cummins Corporate Relay - the relay uses the same route as the half marathon.

The race will start at Victoria Park at 9.15am, the runners will travel out of the city and up the Melton Road, the half marathon runners will then turn left on to Wanlip Road, run through Watermead Park, then Birstall, and along the River Soar before running back to the city to finish at Victoria Park.

Meanwhile, the full marathon runners will turn right on Wanlip Road, run down Glebe Way and Fosse Way in Syston, through East Goscote, then to Thrussington before heading back towards Leicester through Rearsby, East Goscote, Queniborough, and Barkby, and then finishing with the same route the half marathon runners took back to Victoria Park.

There will be rolling road blocks throughout the day covering the route.

Christian Weikert-Picker is organising the marathon with the help of LOROS, which is co-ordinating the volunteers.

Race director Christian Weikert-Picker said: "We are set for another good race this year. It is always a great event to be part of, and we look forward to the 25th. We wish the runners good luck."

He added that there are runners from all over the world taking part - including people from China, Canada, South Africa, and India.

LOROS community fundraiser Debbie Dickman, said: "The Leicester Marathon is one of the main events in the LOROS calendar and as always everyone here is really looking forward to it.

"It's such a big event for everyone in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland and is one that truly brings the whole community together.

"This year though, we're really struggling with getting those last few volunteers to lend a helping hand.

"Whether it's marshalling, handing out drinks or helping to set up, we really could do with a few more people to volunteer – and of course, people can help out on their own, or in groups.

"Maybe you just want to spare some time to give something back, or maybe you're already planning on going along anyway to cheer on a family member or friend, anyone and everyone can volunteer – the more the merrier!"
