Fancy winning £10,000 or a holiday of a lifetime to the Maldives? You could be in with a chance thanks to this year’s LOROS Hospice Grand Raffle.

Tickets for this year’s Grand Raffle can be bought for just £1 from Thursday 7th April, with the top prize being cash or a luxury trip.

Lottery Manager Liz Singleton said: “Who could resist the chance to get £10,000 put into their bank, or a trip to paradise for just £1 a ticket?

“The lucky first prize winner can choose either to have the cash which they can spend on whatever they like, or a relaxing spa break in the Maldives - and the money they spend on the ticket helps a good cause, it’s a win-win really.”

Last year, the raffle raised more than £100,000 for LOROS Hospice, helping people like grandmother Carol Anderton who is currently battling terminal cancer.

The 62-year-old, of Burbage, was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in 2011 and has since been making use of a number of the services at LOROS, including day therapy.

“I was on the ward at LOROS having a panic attack and one of the nurses came and sat next to me on the bed; she gave me a hug and calmed me down. She made me feel worthwhile. She made me feel like I wanted to carry on living,” said Carol.

As Carol’s illness progressed and her treatment was reduced, she said she began to feel isolated.

“I always used to be doing something or seeing somebody, but suddenly I was seeing nobody. That’s when I started coming to day therapy at LOROS,” she added.

“I loved it. It was nice meeting others in the same position as me and we were able to talk freely about our illnesses. I didn’t have to pretend any more, I could just be myself.”

Carol also makes use of the complementary therapy services at LOROS, to help with some of the pain she has.

She said: “Complementary therapy does exactly what it says on the tin. It relaxes you and makes you forget all of your troubles.

“It’s just fabulous at LOROS. The flowers everywhere, the art work on the walls, the brightness, it’s all wonderful; it even feels like the furniture is smiling at you and there is always a coffee or cup of tea waiting for you when you need it.

“Had I known about LOROS before I was ill, I would have volunteered there but I didn’t know what an amazing place it was until it was too late.”

Carol died in April, after sharing her story to help promote this year’s Grand Raffle. Her husband, Alan, asked us to continue using and sharing Carol’s story in her memory.

Every year, LOROS has to raise £4.5 million to continue supporting terminally ill people from Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, like Carol.

Play your part in helping LOROS continue the work they do by buying a £1 Grand Raffle ticket.

This year’s second prize winner will receive £500, with the third prize being £250 and £50 for five lucky runners up.
