Around 150 charity runners raced up more than 300 stairs to the top of a city centre landmark at the weekend in aid of LOROS hospice.

The UK Tower Running Championship Series came to Leicester for the first time last year to hold the St George's Tower Run, after being invited by LOROS.

Participants ranged from local runners and walkers through to some of Europe's best stair climbers.

This year saw three times as many sign-up to tackle to the tower's 351 steps over 20 floors, with both elite participants and charity fundraisers alike climb the iconic blue building for the charity.

They included six-year-old Ryan Walsh, there with mum, Sonja and partner David Harris.

Sonja and David are experienced tower runners, but it was Ryan's first attempt.

After completing the climb in 3 mins 45 seconds the youngster said: "It was good, I'm tired-ish. It felt good. I was pleased with my time, I was in first position for a long while."

Sonja, who was lying in third position among female runners at one point, added: "David ran up with him and we were cheering him on when he got to the top.

"He was absolutely amazing, he sprinted the last two floors."
