More than 200 singers have come together to raise the roof for LOROS at this year’s ‘We Sing for LOROS’ event.
Taking place on Saturday 20th May at the Church of St James The Greater, in Leicester, The Leicestershire Community Choir Challenge saw eight community choirs from across the county come together for the annual event.
A total of 234 singers took part, raising more than £10,000 for LOROS.
Director of We Sing Ltd, Helen Egerton, who organised the event said: “It was a fabulous occasion and well worth all the hard work. I would like to thank everyone who performed, attended and supported us.”
The event was once again adjudicated by internationally-renowned choral master Ken Burton, who was joined on the panel by accomplished musicians Dr David Whittle and Dr Jeremy Leaman.
“I was absolutely delighted when Ken agreed to be involved again and when Marcus Ash, MD of Tarratt Fine Jewellers agreed to be our main sponsor, I was thrilled,” added Helen, who also leads a community choir in the village of Burton Overy. “It meant we had the wherewithal to not only put on a great event, but also make a positive contribution to the lives of lots of people in the county and surrounding area.”
The competition opened with previous winners Leicester’s Amika Choir taking to the stage, followed by Oadby Community Choir, Kibworth Ladies’ Choir, Vocal Point, Harmonic Voices, Raised In Song, Ain’t What You Do and The Dolly Mixtures.
The choirs performed a wide and varied programme, featuring music from Karl Jenkins through to Abba and Gary Barlow.
In a close run, entertaining and at times very moving competition, the winners were Kibworth Ladies’ Choir, whose stunning performance was greeted with rapturous applause from the audience.
The event finished with a rendition of ‘My God Is A Good God’, with the entire audience participating.
Helen said: “The finale beautifully demonstrated what the whole event encapsulated; local people singing together for the sheer joy of it.”
Christopher Tarratt, of Tarratt Fine Jewellers said that knowing the event was fundraising for ‘LOROS’ made the decision to sponsor it ‘easy’.
“Communities coming together to sing, with such enthusiasm and gusto can’t help but rouse us all,” he added.
“Congratulations to Helen and her ‘We Sing’ initiative. What a great night was had by all.”
