Volunteers desperately needed to make this year’s Leicester Marathon possible

People are being encouraged to volunteer at one of the city’s biggest annual events, The Leicester Marathon, fast approaching once again.

The event, which is taking place on Sunday 15th October, is only possible thanks to the hundreds of volunteers who continue to turn up to lend a hand and this year is no different. From handing goody bags, giving out medals, to helping to control the crowd and marshals, there really is a job for everyone.

Steve Bateman, of Coalville, who is returning for another year as a volunteer, said: “It’s a really feel good feeling to know that without help from people like me, the event couldn’t go on.

“The atmosphere is incredible and I would definitely encourage other people to do it.” More than 3,000 runners will take to the streets on the day, with more than 300 volunteers needed to ensure the event runs smoothly and safely.

“I really enjoy seeing the pleasure on the participant’s faces as they run past me,” added 57-year-old Steve, who has been volunteering at the Leicester Marathon for more than 10 years. “Sometimes, you can tell that some of the runners need that little pick me up and a bit of extra encouragement and cheering them on, really means a lot.”

Last year, LOROS, who oversees the organisation of the volunteers on the day, received more than £30,000 thanks to those who ran and fundraised for the Hospice.

LOROS are looking for people across the county to help out, including in the city centre, Belgrave Gate, Queniborough, Syston, Barkby and Watermead Park.

Volunteers should be over 18, or accompanied by a parent or guardian and they will be required from 7.30am and can come in groups or individually.

If people are free on the day and would like to volunteer, please call (0116) 231 8431 or email eventvolunteers@loros.co.uk
