A LOUGHBOROUGH man is to take on a seven-day trek up Kilimanjaro to raise funds for the charity that took care of his mother in her final few months.

Carl Stroud (48) and his partner Roxanne Attenborough (30) will be lacing up their boots in September 2018 to climb the 20,000ft mountain in a bid to raise money for LOROS.

The pair are taking on the trek in memory of Carl’s mum Pat who lost her battle to cancer in October last year.

Carl, a landscape gardener, told the Echo: “My mum passed away in LOROS after she was diagnosed with a brain tumour in March 2016.

“We raised £1,400 through Facebook groups and friends and just recently I liked the LOROS page and the trek came up.

“Roxanne and I thought we could give a bit back to LOROS as a ‘thank you’ for looking after my mum in her last few months.

“LOROS looked after her so well and they did so much for us.”

Carl told the Echo he, Roxanne, and 28 others will start their adventure on September 20, 2018. It will take five days to get to the top of the mountain, and two to get back down.

Carl said: “We’ll be doing about 7km a day, and I think about 32 miles in all. It doesn’t sound far, but when you’re going up 20,000ft it’s a bit different!

“It’s going to be pretty awesome. The last night you start at 11pm and climb for about 10 hours to the summit to see the sunrise with all the clouds below.

“It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity and a way to remember my mum and say thank you to LOROS."

Carl told the Echo he and Roxanne will start training in the New Year and will get ready by going on long distance walks.

He says they are looking to raise money prior to the trek through a raffle and a competition to name a teddy bear they are to take with them up the mountain.

Carl told the Echo he hopes to raise £6,400-plus.

Donations can be made through their JustGiving page.
