When Mandy Morris’ father in law, Ernie Morris, was diagnosed with stomach cancer and emphysema she became Ernie’s full-time carer.

Ernie died at LOROS Hospice on 15th June this year aged 92, and following his death she decided to challenge herself to raise money for the Hospice by taking part in as many running challenges in 12 months as she can.

“The staff at LOROS didn’t stop caring once Ernie died, they helped us through all the things we needed to sort out and pointed us in the right direction. At a time when we didn't know what to do they were always there,” said Mandy.

“The week before Ernie died he became very ill and was admitted to Burton General, but after three days he was transferred to LOROS.

“As a family, we were so relieved. LOROS was such a calm and peaceful place where everyone cared, nurses checked on Ernie quietly and discreetly. Doctors spoke to me and Steve, my husband and kept us informed of what was happening.

“I have vowed to complete 20 running challenges in 12 months, with the first one being just over a week after my father-in-law died, I did a half marathon in Swansea.”

Since June, Mandy, a teacher from Leicester, has completed ten running challenges including the Ashby Novice Triathlon, Erewash Half Marathon, the Loch Ness Marathon and this weekend she’s set to take on the Leicester Marathon.

“Once I’ve taken part in the Leicester Marathon on Sunday, it would mean I’ve ran over 80 miles in 22 days, not including the training between them.

“I'm 56, and not the slimmest of people, but I'm determined and want to do my best in fundraising for LOROS as a thank you for what they did for Ernie. My first target is £2,000 but I'm already thinking of what I can do after I've completed my 20 in 12 to continue fundraising.”

The Leicester Marathon is on Sunday 14th October 2018 at 8.00am, Victoria Park, London Road, Leicester, LE1 7RU.
