Massive congratulations and thanks to the team of walkers who completed this year's Peru Trek to raise funds for our Hospice.
They began their adventure on August 6th and after three flights taking over 24 hrs, arrived at their destination where they would stay for the next two nights.
All the team suffered from headaches for the first couple of days; they weren't sure if it was altitude sickness or hours of travelling on aircraft. Thankfully, they had all cleared up by the time we commenced the start of the Inca trail on day three.
In a party of 29, plus our Global guide Stuart and 4 Peruvian guides headed by Willow, the LOROS team of 10 started their four-day trek. The first night saw them camping at 3000m and after a warm day of short walks and a 11km uphill trek, the temperature dropped as the sun went down and night quickly descended upon them. Head torches were essential as they acclimatised to the cold and dark and crawling around the 2 men tents. They enjoyed a wash with warm water and received pre dinner snacks and a lovely campsite meal cooked by their porters.
Day two was the most challenging as they climbed to 3,600m to reach Pacaymayo, and many of the group found it challenging. There were a few tears and some laughter but those who found it hard also felt a great sense of achievement by the time they reached camp.
On day four the team spent a long day ascending and descending lots of stone steps before they finally arrived at Sun Gate where they had their first sighting of Machu Picchu. Individually walking through the gate felt very spiritual and most people had a tear in their eye.
Angie Fisher, one of the LOROS team, said: "Machu Picchu was so spectacular sitting among the Andes, I could imagine living there as an Inca with all their mysteries and beliefs.
"I saw many Inca archaeology sites during the trip and hearing the history of the Incas was so amazing. The views were outstanding and the colours and cultures of Latin America were so different to what I have ever experienced.
"Global Challenges were well organised and the guides all excellent. The 10 people from LOROS and others in the challenge all gelled really well and will remain always in my memories.
"I can definitely recommend others to complete a challenge on behalf of LOROS."
