Following the cancellation of the Annual Leicester to Skegness cycle ride, LOROS launched the new ‘Go The Distance’ Challenge to be completed by the end of September. Its aim was to cycle a total of 100 miles, the equivalent Leicester to Skegness distance and raise £100 or cycle 35 miles, representing the 35th Anniversary of LOROS, and raise £35.

As they were shielding, Druck's Colin Guttridge and his family challenged themselves to each cycle 100 miles on a turbo trainer. Colin had taken part in the Skegness Cycle Ride in 2019 and was intending to participate in 2020, but this was a huge challenge for Kate (his wife) and Eleanor (daughter, aged 10).  They finished their challenge on the 26th September raising an amazing £575 on the way.

Jo Rowe, Karen Brierley and Bryan Edwards took up the 100-mile challenge completing this in one ride, from Desford/Ratby to Belvoir Castle, around the Vale of Belvoir and back, a route with far more hills than the usual Skegness route!!  This was Jo and Karen’s longest ride to date, with Bryan completing an additional 20 miles to make it his longest ride too!

They were provided with excellent support by Catherine Higgs and her partner Chris, who were on hand for any emergencies (thankfully there were none) and, most importantly, made sure food had been ordered and was available at the refreshment stops.

The team returned to Desford after completing just over 100 miles in nine hours and were met by Debbie from LOROS, who presented their 100 mile ‘Skegness’ Medals.  Total funds raised from this team came to a massive £1,018.

Having had so much fun, they decided to complete a 35-mile ride the following weekend, which did not go as smoothly! A trapped chain, bikes blown over in wind during a coffee stop at Bosworth Water Park (one ending up in the water!) and a fractured bone did not stop the ride being completed!

A spokesperson for LOROS said: “Thank you for everything that you do for the Hospice; your determination to smash the challenges you take on in support of us is truly admirable!

"We would also like to thank everyone who supported the two teams and helped them raise a phenomenal £1593 for us."
