This is Veronica Mickleburgh, Clinical Service Development Project Lead, pictured here with a patient in Day Therapy.
Veronica has been playing the LOROS Lottery for 10 years, in memory of her Dad, Mum and Auntie Nora. Her Mum and Auntie were both cared for by LOROS. She told us:
“Mum died of COPD back in 2013, just 20 days after losing Dad. At the time, Mum was being cared for on the ward at LOROS, and Dad was in the Leicester Royal Infirmary, which is where he died. It was a very difficult time for us all, but LOROS did everything they could to support Mum, even getting her to the hospital to see Dad, and back again, where she received so much love and care. They were married for 62 years, celebrating their diamond anniversary just a couple of years before they both died.
Mum was actually reluctant to go to LOROS at first, even though I’d worked there for many years. But with some gentle persuasion, she agreed. And I’m so glad that she did, as the support she received was immeasurable. Alongside the emotional support, she enjoyed visiting Day Therapy, and had a short stay on the Ward for symptom management. I remember she told me once that after a complementary therapy session at the Hospice, she was so relaxed that evening, she had the best night’s sleep she’d had in a long while. It was her wish to die at home, where she was cared for in her final days by a Clinical Nurse Specialist from LOROS.
So you see, our family have benefitted so much from hospice care and support, I wanted to give something back to say thank you! I joined the LOROS Lottery, as it was an easy way to give little and often, without even thinking about it.
I wanted to share my story, to pay tribute to my Dad on Father’s Day.”
