Celebrating our diverse community

Diwali

Diwali often falls in November - the festival this year began on 31st October. Diwali, the festival of light, is celebrated by millions around the world.

The annual occasion in the calendars of Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and some Buddhists symbolises the spiritual victory of light over darkness.

Leicester’s Diwali festivities are among the largest outside India, offering a vibrant celebration of culture and tradition across two weeks.

Please see the video from our colleague, Deepthi talking about what Diwali means to her.

Remembrance Day

Remembrance Sunday is a national opportunity to remember the service and sacrifice of all those that have defended our freedoms and protected our way of life.

Also referred to as Poppy Day or Armistice Day, Remembrance Day is observed in Commonwealth countries. November 11th is the anniversary of the signing of the armistice, which ended World War One hostilities between Allied nations and Germany in 1918.

We remember the Armed Forces, and their families, from Britain and the Commonwealth, the vital role played by the emergency services and all those who have lost their lives as a result of conflict or terrorism.
