This is used as a global opportunity to raise awareness, educate, encourage support of and demystify dementia.
The word dementia describes a set of symptoms that occur when the brain is damaged by certain diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, a series of small strokes, or other neurological conditions, such as Parkinson’s disease.
While Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia, there are also other common types such as vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia and Frontotemporal dementia. There are also rarer types of dementia that are caused by other diseases and conditions.
Some people develop multiple types of dementia; this is known as mixed dementia. It is also possible for a younger person to develop dementia. When a person develops dementia before the age of 65, this is known as young-onset dementia.
There is information and support available; two local links are below:
On Tuesday 17th September, 12 – 2pm, a drop in session will be held in the social area. This is an informal drop-in session hosted by the Alzheimer’s Society.
Hayleigh, a Dementia Advisor, and the Involvement Lead at the Alzheimer’s Society, will be present with three patients, including one patient with early-onset Alzheimer’s, and their carers. They will be sharing their personal experiences and there will also be information, resources, and guidance on what Alzheimer’s disease is and how we can best support those affected.
You are welcome to drop in at any time during the session. If you need to discuss with your manager when you can be released to attend, please do so.
