Faizal's story: Working in a LOROS Shop

Within our shops team, we have over 500 incredible volunteers that are key to the day-to-day operations of our 29 shops. It goes without saying that we couldn’t do what we do without them!

Today, we wanted to share the story of one of our lovely shop volunteers. Faizal Butt first started volunteering with LOROS at our Humberstone children’s shop in 2016 when he was 17 years old. Since then, Faizal has grown with LOROS and began volunteering at our Uppingham Road furniture shop. Showing commitment and excitement for volunteering over the past 6 years, Faizal has become a key member of our Bank Staff team. Here, Faizal is happily on-hand to support teams across our shops and you’ll even find him running shops for us at times too. Amazing!

Faizal struggled at school due to his dyslexia and found himself leaving college early. At the time, his Dad volunteered for LOROS and suggested that Faizal volunteered too.

Faizal says, "Through volunteering at LOROS, I’ve been able to develop my maths and English with one-to-one training with the team. When I first started volunteering, I lacked confidence and was very shy.

“I was encouraged and coached in all aspects of the roles in the shop. This has helped me tremendously with both my personal development and social skills. I can't thank LOROS enough for helping me to become who I am today. I’ve learnt so much and really feel as if I’ve found my place to be.”

Ann Middleton, LOROS Uppingham Road shop manager commented, "I knew from the moment I met Faizal that he had the skills and determination to become an key part of the team. He does the job perfectly and proves that sometimes, you just need to spend the time with someone to bring out that confidence!”

Faizal adds, "I would recommend volunteering at LOROS to anybody. Even it’s just for a couple of hours a week or a fortnight, you can gain so much from retail experience to meeting new people and personal growth. Not only do you help LOROS but LOROS can help you too.

“LOROS is a great charity that do a remarkable job providing Hospice care for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland and it’s so special to know that you’re a part of that. I will always be extremely grateful for what LOROS have done for me.”

If you ever pop into our Uppingham Road shop, be sure to say ‘hello!’ to Faizal.

Could you spare an hour or two and support your local Hospice? We’d love for you to join our team and make a difference to our patients and their families. Discover our current volunteer roles here.
