Event Details
The LOROS Annual Lunch returns to Winstanley House for an afternoon of fine dining, shopping, friends and fabulous entertainment.
This year we’ll be welcoming Strictly Come Dancing star and TV personality Amy Dowden as our guest speaker who will share stories of her life in the limelight amid recent health battles.
Amy started dancing at the age of 8, but it was only after her A-levels that she committed to it full-time, quickly rising through the ranks despite competing against more experienced couples.
For eight years, Amy struggled with a misdiagnosed stomach condition that left her hospitalised for at least a month each year, meaning she missed out on training, key competitions and many milestones of teenage life.
Alongside her partner (both in life and on the dance floor) Ben Jones, she achieved her dream of becoming British National Latin Dance Champion in 2016. They were the first all-British pair to win the championships in over 30 years.
Joining the cast of Strictly Come Dancing the following year, her highlight on the programme so far is undoubtedly topping the leaderboard in the final alongside CBBC presenter Karim Zeroual.
In 2019, Amy very bravely announced that she’s had Crohn’s disease since a child, alongside the launch of the It Takes Guts campaign. Amy won the Raising Awareness Award at the Hello! Magazine Star Women Awards 2019 and a Points of Light Award from the Prime Minister. In 2020, the BBC broadcast a documentary, Strictly Amy: Crohn’s & Me. She was made an MBE in the King’s Birthday Honours in 2024 for services to raising awareness of Crohn’s and colitis.
In 2023, Amy was diagnosed with breast cancer, undergoing a mastectomy and chemotherapy. She turned this into a positive experience by raising awareness of breast cancer and its treatment alongside the charity CoppaFeel! A BBC documentary about her battle with cancer was broadcast in 2024.
