Despite the poor weather LOROS’ Big Day Out was very far from a wash out as around 1,700 people visited the family fun day on Saturday 13th October.

Battling wind and rain visitors flocked to the Hospice site to enjoy a host of activities for all the family including live entertainment, a food and craft market, BBQ, tombola and raffle.

Children were well catered for with face painting, a petting zoo with turtles, snakes and lizards, fairground rides and a kids’ treasure trail. Ex-Leicester City star Matt Elliott ran football skills sessions for little ones too.

Anna Shutt, who organised the event, said: “The weather was poor but 1,700 people definitely bought the sunshine with them as we all had a great time!

“We are still crunching the numbers on how much we raised, but we think it’s substantial. People were incredibly generous.

“I’d like to thank everyone who braved the weather to visit - there was a real feel-good atmosphere. It was lovely it was so well supported.”

Star Wars characters including Darth Vader and Chewbacca, patrolled the grounds, thanks to the East Midlands garrison.

Jacob Storey, who is currently appearing on CBBC’s Got What It Takes, provided entertainment as well as students from the Soar Valley Music Centre.

Anna added: “We hold the Big Day Out during Hospice Care Week as the aim of the event is to raise awareness of the work LOROS does and dispel some of the myths surrounding Hospice care. We also want to raise money and give everyone a great day and we definitely achieved that.”
